A forest of towering kerri and tingle trees you can journey a canopy walkway some 120 feet above the forest floor for a bird’s-eye view of the ancient trees. The walkway’s lightweight steel trusses provide secure support. We will then stop to refresh and enjoy a two-course lunch at the Southern End Restaurant at the Karri Mia Resort .The restaurant features panoramic views of the surrounding farming country and the Great Southern Ocean. Experience a ‘must do’ dive site that is awesome for novice to technical divers. A two-tank dive, reaching a maximum depth of 125 feet, explores the hulk of HMAS Perth, a guided missile destroyer scuttled after decommissioning to create a dive reef. The 437-foot destroyer still retains one of her original gun mounts, built to the US Navy’s Adams-class destroyer design, the Perth enjoyed a distinguished 34-year career that included three deployments to Vietnam – she remains the only RAN ship to be hit by enemy fire in the last 50 years. Since her scuttling, Perth has provided a home for many species of fish and marine life, including sponges, mussels, oysters, scallops, cuttlefish and kingfish.

Northland is the birthplace of a nation and here, the Ngapuhi Tribe, is the largest group of Maori in New Zealand. You will be taken on your waka journey by a Ngapuhi family, one of the best cultural experiences in Northland’s Bay of Islands, they will introduce you to sights of significance and heritage landscapes, making for a perfect combination of history and scenic beauty. As your waka voyage begins you begin to feel and sense the spiritually of this journey as you paddle your way up the peaceful and tranquil estuaries of the Waitangi River aboard the 50 ft traditional maori waka (canoe). Awe-inspiring is how we describe your arrival at the bottom of the Haruru waterfalls, a spiritual place of the Maori. With commentary and interpretation from the Maori warrior guides; we then continue our voyage past a local Marae which you can see from your waka. This tour offers a perfect combination of eco landscapes and interactive cultural encounters giving you the rare chance to meet the Ngapuhi, the original inhabitants of Northland.

This tour will provide a good overview of the Bay of Islands area including a stop to visit the giant kauri trees and the spectacular Kawiti Glow Worm Caves. Your first visit to the Puketi State Forest allows a chance to stretch your legs with a short walk to view the enormous kauri trees; once covering the whole of the northern region, there are now few remaining areas in New Zealand where these towering trees may exist to live to more than 1,000 years. Next, visit the Kawiti Caves which have strong ancestral ties to the local Maori people who have lived in this region for centuries.
