Highland Coffee and Cultural Village Explorer

After leaving the port, travel south along the coast and into the spectacular mountains to the district of Aileu, which is the gateway to the heartland of the coffee country. This area is renowned for its unique Arabica-Robusta hybrid, grown beneath the large canopied Albezia or “Mother of Coffee” trees. Your first stop will be at The Taste of Timor Cultural Festival in Largo de Lecidere. A celebration of the country and its people’s rich history and diverse cultures, offering an array of beverage, food and craft stalls from around Timor Leste, and features a fabulous entertainment program with local musicians and cultural dance performances. Enjoy a coffee cupping demonstration and sampling. Travelling through the foothills surrounding Dili you will pass by the Nobel Palace, a standing example of a building reflective of Dili’s colonial past. The palace has undergone extensive restoration to return to its former splendour. Stop at the Australian World War 2 Memorial and Museum. Located in Dare, the memorial was built in 1969 by the Australian Diggers, veterans of World War II, and is dedicated to the Timorese people for their support to the Australian soldiers against the occupying Japanese forces from 1942-1945. Continue to the Mabeno Uma Lulik, a sacred animist totem house that is built with natural materials like timber, bamboo, wooden planks, twine and rope made out of the native palm called arenga pinnata. These houses can be found all over East Timor. Besides being just a construction, the concept of uma lulik includes rituals, ceremonies and beliefs - these were the houses where the living could communicate with their ancestors. The word itself, Lulik, refers to the spiritual cosmos, root of life and sacred rules that dictate relationships between people and nature. Passing by the vast wild coffee plantations, your last stop will be at the small village of Aileu with its lively and colourful daily markets. Enjoy lunch prepared by the Projeto Montanha team and learn about their projects in the area. Projecto Montana is a non-profit organisation that undertakes sustainable development projects with community groups to transform the lives of current and future generations.
