Burnt Barrel and Oakabella Homestead

Discover Australian military history at a replica WWI trench and visit the HMAS Sydney Memorial. In 1915, the 11th Battalion took a Turkish trench in Gallipoli, which they named Leane’s Trench. Using old war maps and accounts from diggers, an accurate replica about 135 metres long and 2 metres deep was dug near Geraldton. Find yourself surrounded by the noise of war and look closely at WWI trench warfare combat paraphernalia on this interactive experience. Then, visit the moving and beautifully designed HMAS Sydney Memorial built to honour the sailors who were lost off the Western Australian coast. The memorial is a silver dome of 645 seagulls, one for each Australian sailor lost that day. The wall of remembrance features ship photos and names of the ship’s crew. A bronze statue depicts a woman desperately looking out to sea, waiting in vain for Sydney to return. Stop for a beer at a local RSL (Returned Services League) club on your return trip.
