Aboriginal Outback Cattle Station

Travel by Motorcoach 1.5 hours to the north of Townsville to the region of Ingham, known for its Sugar cane industry. En route you will stop for a quick break and a refreshing taste of local tropical fruits and morning tea. Today is your opportunity to discover the culture and history of an Aboriginal Cattle Station and the Nywaigi Aboriginal People. The Nywaigi Aboriginal people have occupied the lands north of Townsville for over 45,000 years. Unlike Aboriginal people in central Australia that had to travel large distances for food, they were fortunate to live in the ‘land of plenty’ where wildlife, fruits, berries and seafood were freely available. They used the vines of the rainforest to create bags and the tall trees provided the raw material for outrigger canoes that allowed fishing in the local rivers and on the nearby Great Barrier Reef. Join your local guides to uncover the rich heritage of the Station a Grand Homestead where you will hear the history of local indigenous people and the first European settlers of the region, the Cassady family. Participate in a guided tour of the remnant of the Old homestead Site and hear the pioneering stories. Tales are told of the often brutal confrontations between the European settlers and the local Aboriginal people and you will learn of the vital role the Cassady family played in protecting the Nywaigi people . View artefacts and try your hand at Boomerang throwing before being served a traditional Aboriginal and Islander feast know as Kup Murri. The Kup Murri is a selection of meats, fish and vegetables cooked in an authentic underground pit “oven”. Your day includes time to chat to the indigenous story tellers and hear the Captive Lives story. You will also have the opportunity to see an exhibition which is displayed in the Grand Old Mungalla homestead. Return to the pier by motorcoach.
