Cycling Napier's Rotary Pathway


Transfer the short distance from the wharf to the start point of your cycle adventure in the Sunken Gardens on Napier’s Marine Parade. Gear up with a comfortable Scott touring bike and, after a short safety briefing, you’ll be on your way. Follow your guide as you pedal south on the wonderful "water trail"--a dedicated walking and cycling path which follows the coast and forms part of Nga Haerenga or the New Zealand Cycle Trail. Stop to view highlights and points of interest along the way and to enjoy spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and the cliffs of Cape Kidnappers in the distance. After approximately seven miles you will turn inland at Awatoto and cycle on a raised limestone trail through market garden country, following the Tutaekuri River to the suburb of Taradale. From the trail you can view the vineyards, fruit trees and vegetable fields, which represent an important part of the region’s economy. On reaching Taradale, end your cycle adventure on the banks of the Tutaekuri River with views of the historic Otatara Maori Pa site high on the hill. The cycling portion of this tour is a total distance of 10 miles, is completely flat and gentle, so it is suitable for all riders of moderate fitness level. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a hat and a light jacket or sweater. Minimum age is 10 years.
