Cruises to Mare
New Caledonia
Mare
Nature’s aquarium
The best kept secret of all of New Caledonia’s islands, Maré is about as close to paradise as any will ever come.
Divided into eight districts, Maré has a truly untouched beauty. Jagged basalt rocks are evidence of the island’s first volcanic activity, dark forests stretch to the cliffs’ edges and its central plane is scattered with grottos and natural pools where fish and turtles abound. To explore this place is to journey into the most colourful of the Pacific Islands. Though shopping and dining options are scarce, Maré encapsulates what it truly means to get away from the everyday and relax while experiencing something new and inspiring. Its beaches are postcard worthy, its waters are perpetually warm and its vistas are unforgettable.

What To See
Visit Yejele Beach
Take one of the pre-paid shuttles to the beautiful white sands of Yejele Beach, a true gem of the Pacific Islands. Dotted along the beach you will find local vendors selling food, drinks and souvenirs.
Swim in the beautiful bay of Tadine
Fresh cool water, filtered through limestone sits on a layer above the warm ocean water. Experience this sensation while swimming in crystal clear water with incomparable visibility.
DOCKING
Your ship will anchor offshore and tender boats will provide a regular service to and from the island throughout the day.
GETTING AROUND
There are limited local transfers available.
DINING
There is a small coffee shop at the landing spot and local vendors sell coconuts and other refreshments. Quarantine authorities do not generally allow food such as fruit and vegetables, dairy and meat products or sandwiches to be taken off the ship, however commercially packaged confectionery, chips and bottled drinking water are allowed subject to inspection.
SHOPPING
Being the best kept secret of the Loyalty Islands, Maré is more about nature and relaxation than shopping, though there is a market and an information centre at the landing spot. Any souvenirs that are made of plant material or animal products must be declared to quarantine authorities on arrival in Australia or New Zealand. Plant material such as certain seeds and animal products including feathers may be restricted or need to be treated at the owners’ expense on arrival in Australia or New Zealand.
CLIMATE
The climate of the Loyalty Islands is particularly pleasant with next to no sudden changes in temperature. The average annual temperature is 23.5°C with February being warmer at 28°C, and August a milder 18°C. The sea temperature sits at a lovely 22 – 25°C throughout the year.
CURRENCY
Credit Card may not be accepted anywhere on the island. Australian dollars are accepted but change may not be available. We recommend that you take small denominations of Australian dollars and/or local currency ashore.
COMMUNICATION
There are limited public telephones and no internet access available in Mare. Mobile coverage may be available as long as global roaming is selected prior to leaving home.
WHAT TO WEAR ASHORE
To make your day ashore as enjoyable as possible, please wear comfortable flat soled shoes, lightweight clothing and a hat - and don’t forget your swimwear! You are also advised to bring sunscreen and bottled water. Snorkelling gear is available for hire or purchase onboard the ship. A conservative style of dress is considered most appropriate in Maré, so please cover up when away from the beach. Topless swimming or sunbaking is strictly prohibited.
To observe the local customs of the south pacific islands a respectful dress code is required. Swimwear should only be worn at the beach or pool and should be of a modest nature. G-strings, thongs and mankinis should not be worn. Topless sunbathing is also not permitted at anytime. When exploring the Islands and the local communities casual clothing should be worn. As a visitor to these beautiful islands please respect the wishes of local residents.

ENVIRONMENT
Coral is an extremely precious marine organism. In an effort to preserve its natural beauty and habitat please avoid touching it in all circumstances. Furthermore, just as with Australia’s beaches, blue bottles can visit occasionally in the summer months. During your time ashore we also ask that you dispose of your rubbish thoughtfully.
