The Centre was designed by world famous architect Renzo Piano (designer of our very own Pacific Dawn and Pacific Jewel) and named in honour of the late Kanak leader, Jean Marie Tjibaou. Hear fascinating tales of Kanak myths and folklore on a guided walk through the shaded, flora-lined pathway leading to three imposing, traditional Melanesian huts from different regions. Within the main area, a guide will introduce the various exhibition rooms housing precious ritual masks and costumes, totem poles and sculptures, all of an exceptional standard.
Architecturally, the Tjibaou Cultural Centre is to New Caledonia what the Sydney Opera House is to Australia, so a photo opportunity is not to be missed. Please note that photography inside the centre's galleries is not permitted.
Tour participation and exhibits is limited and the gift shop at the centre is closed on Mondays and during cruises that do not include a full-day call in Noumea. To make your day as enjoyable as possible, please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat and SPF30+ or higher factor sunscreen. Make sure to bring swimmers, a towel, and bottled water.
