The SS President Coolidge sailed as a luxury liner from 1931 until 1941 when she went into American Army service as a transport ship. On the morning of 26 October 1942, SS President Coolidge approached Espiritu Santo and after a series of misunderstandings, hit two American mines. After running the ship aground, the order was given to abandon the sinking vessel. The ship still lies there today and with extensive coral, sea turtles and moray eels, is a mecca for divers worldwide.
