Sacred Sounds and Customs of Santo

Your paradise adventure begins by minibus, as you travel north along the coast before heading inland, to a village populated by Banks and Torres Islands locals, in Vanuatu’s northern reaches. Prepare to be greeted by fierce (but friendly) warriors and a refreshing coconut drink before settling in to watch a kastom (custom dance), the traditional preparation of kava and other traditional and sacred customs. The highlight of any visit to northern Vanuatu is witnessing a local water music performance, an amazing display of percussion where water is the instrument. In traditional dress - including arm bands and headwear made from flowers and leaves – the ladies from the remote, northern tropical islands of Vanuatu wade up to their waist to perform mystical water music, unique to this isolated Banks and Torres region

Special Notes

Restroom facilities at the village may be rustic. To make your day as enjoyable as possible, please wear comfortable flat-soled shoes, clothing suited to the weather conditions, a hat and SPF30+ or higher factor sunscreen and bottled water. Please note, kava is a non-alcoholic beverage used traditionally in the Pacific Islands for ceremonial purposes. Formed by the root of the pepper tree, kava usually has a mildly sedative and anaesthetic effect, although it is possible to have adverse reactions including upset stomach. The traditional method of preparing kava does not meet P&O Cruises standard of health and safety and any participation in trying kava is at the risk of the individual.
